Thank you, Mr Buckley !

An amazing surprise in the ASB classes

This year the two ASB classes in year 8 with Mrs Goyat and Miss Dunne are studying a book called “A Single Shard”. The story is about Tree-ear, a young orphan and urchin who dreams of becoming a potter.

On 29th November 2019, a master potter came in our class to teach us about pottery. His name was Mr Buckley; he is American but he lives in Orleans. He distributed a lump of clay per person and explained to us how to make a bowl. At the same time, he spoke about pottery. I learned for example that kaolin is a clay from high mountains in China used for making porcelain. Limoges, in France, was the first town where we found such clay in the whole of Europe. He showed us different clays from Orleans, the Sarthe and Southern France. After, he made a pot on his potter’s wheel, it was beautiful. At the end, we could ask him questions and he took our pots to fire them in his electric kiln.

I loved this class very much. I didn’t think that I would ever be able to make this bowl. We were lucky to have this guest and we learned a lot of things about the history of pottery.

An interesting visit

On the 29th November a master potter came to show us his work. His name is Mr Buckley and he is American. We are studying a book about pottery: “A Single Shard”.

We had little pieces of clay waiting for us on the tables and we tried to make small bowls. Mr Buckley told us about the different types of pottery, he had a book with pictures in it. He had brought dried clay of all colours. We observed them closely and touched them. Then he gave us a demonstration. With his potter’s wheel, he made a beautiful pot. To make good pottery, we need concentration and precision. The result was impressive.

We asked him questions about his career and if it was hard to be a potter.

I really enjoyed this demonstration and also to be able to make our own bowl! We learned a lot of things about pottery and it was great.
